The Quilt Bee Block of the Month - Newberg

REQUIRED PATTERN:

The Quilt Bee by Kate Colleran Designs for Seams Like A Dream (availble in-store)

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS:

We will discuss the fabric requirements at the first session on May 18th.  The pattern calls for 17 different fabrics plus background for blocks, background and sashing for the quilt, backing, and binding.

I plan that the first month will be purchasing and cutting your fabrics for the blocks and getting prepared to start the individual blocks.

An option for the fabrics would be to choose fabrics for each block as you make it which is what Barb did for the sample.  I will have information on fabric requirements for each block at the first session.

ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES:

There are options for a couple of the blocks for creating them using fusible applique (or hand applique if you desire) or making the blocks using traditional piecing techniques.  Both of these methods will be discussed at the appropriate time.

The pattern also calls for several different specialty rulers or templates are provided with the pattern.  I propose that unless you already own these rulers that you use the template method as you’ll only use them once or maybe twice in the entire quilt.  I thinking that the ruler called for in cutting the braid portion of the project may be worthwhile due to the amount of use in the project it would be – I’ll make that determination soon and in plenty of time for you to purchase this ruler if it makes sense.

 The specialty rulers include:

         Tri Recs Ruler

         House Ruler by Creative Grids

         Triangle Squared Ruler

         Perfect Rectangle Ruler

         Kaleidoscope Ruler

         Dresden Plate Ruler

Braid Template by Seams Like A Dream

If making templates rather than using rulers there are a couple of methods to create the templates – template plastic or freezer paper.  I will discuss both of these methods at the first session.

If you are going to be doing the fusible applique you’ll need about 2-1/2 yards of paper backed fusible web to complete the entire project.

There are a couple of blocks that use paper piecing and I will supply you with the printed papers for those blocks.
