Taking Quilting to the Next Level- Combine Walking Foot and Free Motion Techniques

Are you new to quilting your own quilts?  Would you like to take your quilting to the next level?  Uncomfortable with free motion quilting?  Then perhaps this class is for you.  Learn how to use your walking foot to quilt and to combine with free motion designs.  This class teaches you how to break down a quilt into more manageable areas for quilting and takes the fear out of free motion quilting.  Join Robbie Berg on Tuesday, October 11th 10:00-4:00 pm for this fun class.

This is the second class in a series about quilting with your walking foot.  For this class we will be adding a section on how to use your free motion foot to enhance your walking foot quilting with fillers. The first class in the series is not a required pre-requisite to this class although it is helpful. However, please be familiar with how to install both your walking and free motion feet.  It would also be helpful if you have done some simple straight line quilting with your walking foot so you understand the motion and how it performs on your sewing machine.

The following is a supply list for the class:

  • Sewing machine in good working order (be sure to include power cord and foot pedal and bobbins)
  • Walking foot or independent dual feed (IDF).
  • Free motion foot.
  • Left and right quilting guides.
  • Thread stand (optional).
  • Basic sewing supplies (marking tools, pins, scissors, rotary cutter, etc.).
  • Thread to match or contrast your quilt sandwich and monofilament or polyester.
  • Painter’s tape for marking.
  • Machingers or other quilting gloves if that is how you prefer to free motion (optional).
  • Hand embroidery hoop – I will be demonstrating a way to use it to help stabilize your quilting (optional).
  • 3-4 quilt sandwiches either spray basted or pin basted together (12” x 12” is large enough but if you have fat quarters sandwiches that works too).
  • Paper and pencil to take notes.
  • Feel free to bring any projects you are planning to quilt – I am happy to provide some ideas about how to do it with your walking and/or free motion feet.  Other students in the class will be a good resource as well.

If you would like to go an extra step, stitch one or two of your quilt sandwiches in a 2” grid pattern with your walking foot.  You can do it vertically and horizontally or on the diagonal or both.  If you took the last class, we worked on that. Don’t worry if you don’t have time to do this.  I will allow time and go over it in class.
