Fracturing Fabrics Quilt

This sewing technique is fun, quick and easy.  You will cut fabric a
certain way, sew it back together a certain way and end up with a wall
hanging that is beautifully alluring.  These wall hangings make great
gifts.

Fabric:  Choose a fabric with a strong 18” to 24” repeat in the design.
A large motif surrounded by various sizes of smaller design elements
with a variety of colors makes an interesting quilt.  (A print with all
the same sized images does not work.)  It is nice if the background has
some movement, such as marbling, subtle swirls, or shadowed areas.
Avoid designs with people or animals, as you may end up with fractured
body parts.  Batiks do not work because they are hand printed and the
repeats are not evenly spaced or symmetrical.  Stripes do not work.
Look at large floral, large geometric and Asian prints.  Panels also
work great.
You need four repeats of the design element. You can put a fifth one on
the back to show what the fabric looked liked before you fractured it.

Supply list:
  • A 23” X 35” cutting mat (large size)
  • A 6” X 24” ruler; and a smaller ruler for cutting 3” squares
  • Rotary cutter with a sharp blade
  • 22” X 28” piece of poster board with an 18” X 21” rectangle cut out of
  • the middle.  (optional and people can share if necessary)
  • Black fine point sharpie marker
  • 1 ½ yards gridded fabric, either flannel or interfacing.  The one-inch
  • square grid works best.
  • Lots of straight pins!!!
